Our Clients and their Loft: Located in a newer loft condominium project in Lower Downtown Denver, this space had been minimally finished by its first owner. Our clients, a young couple, wanted to renovate the space to better suit their needs, which included space for the occasional guests. In addition, they wanted a separate bedroom (for privacy while guests were staying), with a two-sided gas fireplace between the bedroom and the living room. There was also a desire for a small home office space, additional storage and changes to the kitchen.
Our Design: A bedroom was created by construction of a 7.5' high wall. A gas fireplace is set into an angled wall between the new bedroom and the living area. Access into the bedroom is through custom sliding doors on a wall-mounted track. In the kitchen, to save money for use elsewhere in the loft, the cabinet boxes were left in place and new doors installed on them. We also designed a pantry cabinet to be installed at one end of the existing kitchen. On one side of the living area we designed a custom work area, with storage adjacent to it, connecting with the gas fireplace noted above. The fireplace has a custom-designed steel surround and steel hearth. On the opposite wall of the living area, a pull-down wall bed has been installed. This is the "guest bedroom". To afford guests some privacy, a curtain was installed, attached to a curving metal track. This track, attached to the concrete ceiling, runs in a "u" shape. When the curtain is closed, the guest bed is surrounded and separated.
